Student Guide to String Instrument Care & Tips on Purchasing One - February 8,
2008 (rescheduled from October 12, 2007)
Renown violin maker
CharlesRufino studied in Europe and USA. In 1983, Mr. Rufino established The
Long Island Violin Shop located in NYC and in Huntington, Long Island. He will
present this lecture on taking care of your instrument. Taking care of your
instrument will not only help you play and sound better but also help you make
rapid musical and technical progress. Mr.Rufino will also give guidance and
hints on how to purchase your own instrument and bow.
Lecture #2: Sight
reading Preparation for NYSSMA Violin & Viola solos -
March 7, 2008
The ability to read
music well is essential to be a self-sufficient musician. The ability to
recognize key signatures, comprehend rhythmic patterns and count beats while
keeping a steady tempo will guarantee you a perfect score on the sight reading
portion of your NYSSMA solo adjudication. Let us not forget that the
sight-reading portion of every NYSSMA exam is worth up to a crucial 10 points!
Please remember to bring your instrument. This class will be given by
Dorothy Shorter.
Lecture #3:
Vibrato (Book 3 & up)- Bring Instrument - March 28, 2008
Reserved for
advanced students, the art of the vibrato takes musical expression to a higher
level, creating various textures in sound in accordance to the style and period
of the piece being played. In this class, proper technique will be taught and
demonstrated to ensure a stronger wrist and tone. The three aspects of vibrato
(wrist, arm & finger) and how each works and incorporates into another will be
discussed. An appropriate vibrato will enrich the tone color and quality of the
piece of music you are performing.
Lecture #4:
Piano Performing for Four Hands - April 11, 2008
This class will
demonstrate and discuss preparation and practice methods for performing as a
four hand team. It will be led by piano faculty members and duo pianists, Jenny
Chai and Piotr Szczepanik. They have performed extensively in Europe and the
USA. Student duos may be selected to perform a work, which will then be
critiqued.
