MUSICAL TRAINING FOR THE VERY YOUNG

The most frequent question we are asked is: When should my child start music lessons?  And while there are variations and nuances involved in each individual answer we give, our basic response is that your child is never too young to start music classes.  And that is why, as musicians, teachers and parents, we introduced KINDERMUSIK® to our school.

OUR TIME currently is our youngest KINDERMUSIK® level, although in some semesters or during the Summer Session, we will offer VILLAGE (newborn to 18 months of age).  OUR TIME  brings like-minded parents and children together in a social setting where creative expression and imaginative play is based upon musical activities.  These incorporate singing, rhyming, movement and play.  Children have an opportunity to experience sounds that are new to their ears or which have been heard but never associated with an instrument, such as the cymbal, autoharp or recorder.  Our certified KINDERMUSIK® teacher is a trained musician.

IMAGINE THAT is the next rung on the musical ladder.  Here, children are given a basic instrument and taught the rudiments of musicianship, especially the basic tenets of listening and following directions.  Sound differentiation is an important component, and children are taught basic lessons about the music staff, note pitches and values.  They are taught to recognize the sounds of different instruments as well.  Listening, observation, imitating, and creating are key elements in this course.  While non-pressured, non-competitive, and non-stressful, the course also acknowledges the exuberance of this age group, and there is plenty of time for creative movement done to music.

MUSIC for the YOUNG CHILD is the bridge between KINDERMUSIK® participation and MILI's Instrumental programs.  Not every child moves there, but over the years, many of MILI's KINDERMUSIK® alumni have gone on to become MILI musicians.  This course gives instrumental-bound youngsters training in elementary music theories, and it often encourages other children to become interested in music education and instrumental study.  Most of all, it helps develop a lifelong appreciation of music through knowledge.  The four-semester course is given over a period of two years.  Parents generally commit to a semester at a time.  We highly recommend this course to families who believe that their children are musical or have musical potential but who may not yet be ready for the discipline required for studying an instrument.

KINDERMUSIK® AND SUZUKI

Beginning with Imagine That, MILI offers a discounted KINDERMUSIK® rate for students who take on Suzuki study of an instrument.  For more information about Suzuki, click here.  We are always happy to discuss this component with you.
