Teaching and Internship Opportunities
When younger students ask for extra help in their instrumental lessons, the Directors will often recommend that a more advanced student or our Alumni assist in teaching these students in either a private or group setting. This provides the advanced students who have been under our tutelage for many years to assist in the instruction of younger students, giving them valuable insights and experience not only into their instrument, but into leadership and education. A valuable application of the teaching assistant’s musical knowledge, it can also act as an invaluable stepping stone in a potential career in the fields of music or education. This experience, aside from being tremendously insightful in its own right, is a powerful resume booster when applying to college as well as an opportunity to gain community service hours. In addition students can participate in internship programs where they can learn the "behind-the-scenes" work needed to run a music school. Opportunities include experience in concert promotion, literary article write ups, and skills needed to be a music librarian.
Many students who have participated in our teaching and internship opportunities went on to pursue music degrees in schools such as The Juilliard School, University of Michigan, NYU Steinhardt, Eastman School of Music, and other fine Ivy league institutions and positions in Symphonies such as the Rochester Phiharmonic.
